Stain Removal Treatment
If it’s especially tough staining – think tea or coffee, those old favourites – then you might want to come in to the practice for our special stain removal treatment. It’s performed using airflow: this is a jet of compressed air, water and bicarbonate particles that gently removes surface staining from your teeth.

While both 6% hydrogen peroxide and 16% carbamide peroxide are effective teeth-whitening agents, they differ in their composition and application. Hydrogen peroxide typically acts faster due to its higher concentration but may cause increased tooth sensitivity. Carbamide peroxide, on the other hand, is a milder option as it releases hydrogen peroxide over time, making it a preferred choice for those with sensitive teeth. Phillips Zoom! Whitening
Philips Zoom! Whitening is a trusted and professional teeth whitening system designed to deliver stunning results with maximum safety. Using advanced LED technology and a specially formulated whitening gel, Philips Zoom! Whitening can significantly brighten your smile in just a single in-office session or through take-home kits. Whether you choose in-office or at-home treatment, Philips Zoom! is known for its ability to provide effective, long-lasting whitening while minimizing discomfort and sensitivity, all under the guidance of dental experts.
The Zoom! Procedure
The complete procedure takes an hour and a half, but a regular teeth cleaning is recommended prior to the actual Zoom! teeth whitening session. The procedure begins with a short preparation to cover the lips and gums, leaving the teeth exposed. The dentist or dental assistant then applies the Zoom! hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, which works together with the Zoom! light to penetrate the teeth and break up the stains and discoloration. The gel remains in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated. During this time, you can relax, watch TV or listen to music.
The gel is applied for 4x 15-minute sessions of light activation, for a total treatment time of around an hour and a half, when taking preparation and reapplication time into account. Immediately afterwards, a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste-gel is applied to the teeth.
Aftercare: Maintaining Whitening Effects
You will be given a Zoom! home-use touch-up kit that includes custom-fitted whitening trays. Follow your dentist’s instructions for when and how to use this touch-up kit.
To help maintain the whitening effects of your treatment, your dentist may advise you to avoid certain foods and beverages, or consume them in moderation to avoid staining your teeth. This includes tea, coffee, red wine, cola, etc
Internal Bleaching
If you have a dark coloured or a discoloured tooth, you can be assured Cowgate Dental have the solution.
A root filled tooth can be whitened internally by inserting dental bleach into the pulp chamber or access cavity and it bleaches the tooth from the inside.
The suitability for internal bleaching is rather obvious to see. If the tooth only has a small stain on the outside, then internal bleaching would not be the appropriate treatment for you.
There are two types of bleaching products for internal bleaching. These are Carbamine Peroxide (Carbamide), or Sodium Perborate, which can be mixed with 3% hydrogen peroxide to increase effectiveness.
One of the main benefits of internal bleaching is that a dark coloured tooth can be easily corrected in root-filled teeth without the need for using post-crown drills.
Internal Bleaching from Cowgate Dental can be carried out at £150 per tooth.

How is Teeth Whitening done?
At Cowgate Dental, we only use the best products so we think that is your decision if you want to do it at home, at our clinic or a combination of both.
What kind of stains can it remove?
Teeth whitening can remove stains that are caused by coffee, cigarettes, wine or medications such as antibiotics like tetracycline.
Who is not suitable for?
Pregnant women and anyone under the age of 18.
Will the dentist do an oral examination before the procedure?
Yes, the dentist is going to not only make an oral examination, but they will review your oral history, and give you a teeth whitening treatment plan.
What if I have fillings, dentures, crowns or porcelain restorations?
We can remove stains only from the enamel surface and our dentists will make sure your teeth are whitened to an even shade (in Surgery Whitening only). If you require additional treatment, it can be done at Cowgate Dental.
After teeth whitening treatment what should I eat or drink?
It is advised not to eat and drink anything coloured for between 24-48 hours. Also, you should not smoke anything for the same period of time.
